Infant Development Day: A Collaborative Interprofessional Education Experience

Purpose : The purpose of this experiential learning activity was to increase communication and understanding of the various healthcare professional's roles in the developmental assessment of children.Description : Infant Development Day (IDD) established by the Physical Therapy Program at MGH Institute of Health Professions, allows students the opportunity to apply their developmental skills for infant and children developmental assessment. After completing didactic content for normal development, the students observe and interact with children performing a variety of age appropriate gross and fine motor skills facilitated by a physical therapist. In more recent years nurse practitioner (NP) and communication and speech disorder (CSD) students were included to create an interprofessional experience. Interprofessional collaborative care is critical to achieving quality, efficient, cost effective patient centered care and interprofessional education has become a focus of many institutions in order to bridge the gap between academia and the clinic. Historically although students observed the children together there was minimal interprofessional interaction so this experiential learning activity was developed to increase interprofessional interaction and collaboration.Summary of Use : PT, nursing and CSD students were involved in IDD. Online courseware (D2L) was utilized to prepare students from the various professions prior to IDD and students were assigned specific tasks to demonstrate their professional role responsibilities. Students then were placed in small interprofessional groups to observe and examine a child's developmental milestones facilitated by interprofessional faculty. A graded, on-line threaded discussion and student survey addressed competencies for child development and interprofessional role identification. There were 125 student participants represented by PT (54), nursing (41) and CSD (30). The on-line discussion demonstrated the learners' understanding of normal developmental milestones and recognition of role responsibilities. The student evaluation survey indicated that 80% of the respondents felt that IDD enhanced their understanding of normal development and 75% agreed that the interprofessional interaction facilitated an appreciation of the various health professions role and responsibilities.Importance to Members: Interprofessional education is increasingly becoming an integral part of PT preparation as the complexity of the current health care environment demands efficient, effective collaborative care among health care teams. This experiential activity met the shared educational objectives of understanding child development, role responsibilities and collaboration by promoting student participation and communication in interprofessional groups. This experience is one example of an educational model of that meets interprofessional learning objectives.
